HOCO Team

Coaches Jay Herdson & Vickie Hopp

The Howard County team was the Cancer to 5K Program’s first expansion team.  Through a partnership with Mady & Mules/Howard County Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation, this team has a dynamic coaching staff.  The team is co-coached by Jay Herdson and Vickie Hopp.

Jay Herdson has been a resident of Howard County for over 25 years.  He has been involved in sports and athletics his entire life.  Coach Jay began competitive running in high school where he was captain of the cross county and track teams.  He then attended Towson University and The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy where he earned a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy.  In 2010, Jay passed the national board examination to become a certified specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy.

Jay serves as Vice President and part owner of Howard County Physical Therapy where he has worked for the past 12 years.  Jay helped to develop the C.A.R.E (Cancer and Rehabilitative Exercise) of Maryland program at Howard County Physical Therapy and has been coaching the Cancer to 5K program since its inception in Maryland two years ago.  Coach Jay has always believed that regular exercise is an essential element in living a happy and healthy lifestyle, and he is committed to helping people reach their personal fitness goals.

Vickie is a staff physical therapist at Howard County Physical Therapy.  She received a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland, College Park.  She then went on to earn a master’s degree in Athletic Training and a doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from Shenandoah University in Virginia.  She enjoys working with athletes of all ages, as well as watching sports and participating in physical activity.

Meetings will take place at various parks in Howard County, MD.

RACE INFORMATION FOR SPRING 2012:

Survivor Harbor 7 [4 mile distance]

The Active Survivors Network developed Survivor Harbor 7 for survivors who run, walk, or roll.  While open to all, this race uniquely celebrates the athletic achievements of survivors of life-altering conditions such as cancer.  Survivor Harbor highlights these athletes’ achievements to generate public interest and greater awareness of survivors’ accomplishments. Ultimately, the race impacts the health and quality of life of survivors by encouraging greater levels of fitness and participation in competitive sports.  Over 2,000 runners are expected to participate!
